What Sets Gearwright Apart

Benefits Worth Knowing Before You Choose

Watch repair varies widely in quality and approach. Here is how Gearwright does things differently — and why that matters for your timepiece.

Six Reasons Customers Return to Gearwright

Each of these reflects a specific decision about how we run the workshop — not a marketing point.

Dedicated Watchmakers

Every watch is handled by a watchmaker — not a general technician. The team has combined experience of over 25 years working on mechanical and automatic movements.

Service Documentation

Movement servicing and restoration work comes with a printed job record. You have something concrete to refer to — and to share with any future watchmaker.

Transparent Pricing

Prices are stated clearly before any work begins. There are no added costs at collection unless something unexpected was found and discussed with you first.

Proper Equipment

A timing machine, watchmaker's lathe, ultrasonic cleaner, and pressure tester are part of the standard setup. Not all watch repair shops in the region carry this range.

Parts Network

We source components through contacts in Bangkok, Switzerland, and Japan. Older or less-common watches are not automatically turned away.

No-Appointment Walk-Ins

Battery and strap work is handled without a pre-booked slot. Drop by any day of the week during opening hours and we will look at it while you wait if the queue allows.

Professional Expertise

The watchmakers at Gearwright trained through formal apprenticeships and extended professional placements — not self-taught in isolation. Lead watchmaker Somchai spent a decade in a Bangkok atelier before opening the Pattaya workshop. This background shows in how jobs are approached: methodically, with reference to the manufacturer's specifications where available, and with a preference for doing things once rather than quickly.

  • Combined 25+ years on mechanical and automatic calibres
  • Swiss and Japanese movement experience
  • Vintage and current production watches

Measured Process

Each job follows a defined sequence: initial assessment, quote and agreement, disassembly with part documentation, cleaning and service, reassembly, timing verification, and final check before return. Nothing in that sequence is skipped because of time pressure. If a job takes longer than expected, we contact you to explain rather than rushing it through.

  • Multi-position timing check on serviced movements
  • Part logging during disassembly
  • Final function check before handover

Workshop Equipment

A timing machine allows us to measure rate accuracy across multiple positions — something you cannot judge by feel or ear. An ultrasonic cleaner handles parts that need removing oils and deposits without physical abrasion. A pressure tester verifies water resistance after cases are opened and resealed. These are standard tools in a professional watchmaking environment, and they produce measurably better outcomes.

  • Timing machine for rate measurement
  • Ultrasonic parts cleaning
  • Water resistance pressure testing

Customer Communication

You are told what is happening at each stage. If the assessment reveals something that was not visible initially — a cracked jewel, a corroded contact, a seized arbour — we reach you before continuing. Nothing additional is done without your knowledge and agreement. For visitors who have left Pattaya, we can hold the watch securely and arrange collection or discuss return shipping.

  • Contact before any scope changes
  • Secure holding for customers who travel
  • Straightforward answers to technical questions

Practical Outcomes

A serviced watch should run consistently within manufacturer's specified rate tolerances. For a mechanical watch that means general timekeeping accuracy within a predictable daily range — not perfection, but reliable, steady performance over time. We tell you what the timing machine recorded so you have a baseline to work from. If a watch comes back within three months running significantly outside its post-service readings, bring it in and we will investigate.

  • Timing sheet included with movement service
  • Clear rate targets discussed at drop-off
  • Post-service concerns reviewed without charge

What Makes Gearwright Distinctive

These are specifics, not claims.

Coastal Climate Knowledge

We see the specific damage that Pattaya's humidity and salt air causes to watch seals, crowns, and case backs. This affects how we assess and prepare a watch differently than an inland workshop would.

Visitor-Friendly Logistics

Many customers are in Pattaya short-term. If a job takes longer than your stay, we can hold the watch securely and discuss how to arrange handover or return after you leave.

Owner Education

We explain what was found, what was done, and what to watch for going forward. Customers leave knowing more about their watch than when they came in — without a sales pitch attached.

International Parts Sourcing

Through suppliers in Bangkok, Switzerland, and Japan, we can source parts for watches that most local shops would return unserviced. Timelines vary but we keep you informed throughout.
